Little Barbie just turned six months, and her spay appointment was today. I decided to show this spay on the site, because spays tend to get more complicated the older the female.
Dr. C was kind enough to let me photograph the procedure, so that we did!! I previously observed a pediatric neuter, which can be found here.
My goal with this is to show that spaying is NOT painful to the pet, and can help save countless lives from death in shelters or, the worse option, living lives as unwanted and neglected pets.
ALSO, you need to be SELFISH -- !! -- spay before the first heat cycle and mammary cancer is drastically reduced; spay after the first cycle and before the second and the risk is greatly reduced; spay after the second heat cycle and before the third and the risk is slightly reduced; spay after the third heat cycle and there is no affect on the chances of developing mammary tumors later in life.
Also, through this procedure I learned (yet again!) the dedication and hard-work of excellent veterinarians, like Dr. C --
-- so, onward!
