I received various emails today from Alli in Louisiana, a rescuer who I have known and respected for more than three years. His page at the LA SPCA is here. Below are emails regarding Billy Bud, a boy that needs help...

From Callie --

"I'm a friend of Alli's and the person who told her about Billy Bud, the black and white Pit who was hit by a car.

Because of the hurricane we have a real dilemma. One of our volunteers who is a Pit lover took him with her when we evacuated the shelter, thinking she would bring him back in a few days and all would be well.
We didn't send him with the other dogs because the shelter in Houston
euthanizes all the Pits they get. Unfortunately we won't be going back
for a while and she cannot keep him indefinitely. She is now heading for her home in MA with Billy Bud and her own dog, Jack, another Pit.

Emily is pretty much desperate to find a place for Billy Budd now. The whole city of New Orleans is pretty much under water, so all of our usual resources are scattered to the winds. Is there any chance that you could find a foster home and/or home for Billy Bud if Emily could get him somewhere near you? We really don't know what else to do.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions - we love this dog and want him to have a good home. He's been through a lot and we just can't see letting anything bad happen now."

From Emily:

"I was given your name by Alli and Callie, who have contacted you regarding Billy Bud. I'm a hurricane Katrina evacuee currently in Texas, and I have nowhere to go but to my family in Massachusetts. I'm losing my traveling partners tomorrow, and I need to find somewhere to place Billy Bud. I already have my dog with me, and I'm becoming overwhelmed and running out of money.

Billy gets along great with people and dogs (I'm not sure about cats). He's neutered and up to date on shots. He's about 35 pounds but probably should be about 45 - he's still recouperating from a car accident. He's completely healthy, but skinny and has a slight limp. He's a great dog. Please contact me!

So, there we are --

-- I can take Billy in for a short-term stay, but I would love for an approved foster to temporarily watch him --

-- if you are interested, please fill out an adoption application above, and the normal adoption procedures of home-visits, etc. will be followed --

-- also, if you cannot help with fostering, donations to little Billy would be much appreciated, for transporting and for his foster stay --

-- pictures to come -- !!

-- THANKS, and know you made a difference -- !!

Update:

Emily just wrote me this -- 8/31/05 at midnight --

"Hi Eric -
I contacted another rescuer and she found a place for him in Austin Texas. I'm going there tomorrow to check it out. I'll contact you if it falls through.
-Emily
"

So, it looks like we can breathe easier for this boy -- I'll update this page as I get feedback from Emily!
