Here is the story of little Kayla, a 4 month old pit bull puppy born in Ohio.
Ohio isn't a bad state overall, but it is difficult for pit bulls, from its history of breed-specific laws angled against pit bulls -- and from a state with negative pit bull history.
Today, most of Ohio's anti-pit bull laws have been lifted, but shelters have problems getting great adopters --
-- this is the case with baby Kayla --
-- just 4 months old, a hearing girl (not deaf) and cute as a button.
She's was brought in to the shelter when an Ohio landlord found out what breed she was, and he threatened to shoot her --
-- as you can see, it takes quite a bit to change peoples' minds, and Kayla is best rescued from Ohio.

So, this little girl is spayed, sweet and ready to go --
-- are you keen on her? Can you show her the life a little sweetheart as she deserves to see?
If so, fill out an adoption application above!

Happy dance, commence!
On March 18th, I got a passioned call from Cindy at the Ohio shelter, with a plea that sweet Kayla had only the week left to live, and then her time was up.
I was looking out my back window, at the right, without a plan -- :(

Well, before I knew it, I was searching through emails for this little lady, and up came Patrick in downstate New York.
Pat is a cell tower specialist, and he travels around the east coast, working on towers.
He would take his girl with him on his travels (along with her crate), and on his off-days, he'd hike the Appalachian Trail with her --
-- in short, a dream come true!
Next, Aimee from our forum did the home visit, and he PASSED!
Now we fast-forward to Friday night...
... and here we were lucky enough to have Cindy and her husband bring Ms. Kayla up to New York from Ohio.
LOOK AT Ms. Kayla -- looks like our girl took up EATIN' at the shelter -- !!
I have to say, too, this lady is a REAL LADY -- just full of love, and in great shape to get on to living -- !!
The next day, we meet up with Patrick in Rochester, and he loves her --
-- at one point, he was walking back to his car to get a pen, and she tried following him, sort of like, "UMMM -- you FORGOT something -- !!"
Here he is, hamming it up with K, and here she is, saying, "Why did it take you so long to find me -- ??!!" |
So, off Kayla went, to her new home, with many future dreams and aspirations.
What a miracle her saving was -- in one week, she went from death row to being a queen -- !!
Next, the one-day update!
Pat writes --
"Hey Eric,
Just wanted to let you know how Kayla is doing and send you some photos. Kayla has been an absolute angel. She's gotten to explore about 3 different houses."
My mom absolutely loves her new grandaughter. My mom has a jack russel. She, an older dog and doesn't really like to play, Kayla on the other hand does. They got along pretty well until Sade tried to nip at her. Kayla just backed off, I couldn't have asked for a better reaction. I was keeping a close eye on her, but I needed to see her with other dogs, and she is impeccable. My other friends that have met her have all fell in love with her.
My friend stephanie has been deathly afraid of pit bulls since she was a little girl. She was attacked when she was a little girl. I was having some trouble with my car when I was over her house. I had left Kayla inside with her. She was laying on the couch, watching tv and Kayla jumped up on her and nuzzled into her neck. Steph said she was thinking " I know I should be afraid, but I'm not". Her words not mine. I think Kayla is helping to convert people from the dark side!
"The only issue I've had with her is she' s fighting a losing battle with Daisy (Steph's bird). So far she's lost a wisker and some pride, but other than that no blood shed. She's pretty much settled in here." |
"The house was spotless when she got here, now her toys have overrun the place (you can see in the photos). I don't mind though, atleast she has a place she can call her own finally. This morning I grabbed one of my safety ropes and took her for about an 1-1/2 hour walk in the woods. She had an absolute field day. She had about 150' worth of room to explore with.
The more time I spend with her, the more similarities I find with her. Neither me nor her are all that coordinated. She's a little spastic when it comes to stairs and she hasn't quite mastered getting in and out of the car. I still have a little trouble with both of those at times too. I guess that's it for now. I'm attaching 5 photo's. 2 of her relaxing on the couch. A picture of the pail of toys she came home to and the after effects of said pail on my house. Thanks again for helping me adopt such a wonderful dog.
Patrick"

Well, WHAT a GREAT update, Patrick -- !!
Here's Ms. Kayla, again, like, "Yup, y'all -- I'm HOME!"
So success has been said to have been measured even by letting one's life breathe a little easier --
-- with Kayla, we have indeed done that.
Our little lady is a new ambassador for the breed, and she's loved and loving --
-- what more could she or Patrick want -- nothing, we think -- !!
GREAT WORK, ALL -- from Shawna to Cindy to Kia to Patrick -- to Kayla -- what an inspiration -- !!
A worthy update, indeed!
So, after two months in her new home, Kayla is doing GREAT!
Patrick writes --
"Hey Eric,
Just thought I'd send over some photos. I finally got a digital camera, and Kayla's been one of my more willing subjects. Sorry I haven't kept better updates, things have been crazy busy with work. Kayla has been doing great staying in the hotels with me and visiting sites during work. I guess that's it for now."
" Thanks for matching me
with such an amazing creature.
Pat"
Well now, it seems like happy and happier have finally met up -- and they're a match made in heaven -- !! |
Here's Ms. Kayla and Pat, on the banks of the Husdon... |
And then, girl and Dad at home -- !! |
Next, living almost a dream-like life in the foothills of the Catskills -- |
-- and HERE -- okay, somebody PINCH me --
-- look how FAR she's COME -- !!
Finally, Daddy's little helper, at work --
-- I'm sure she makes many a dull day FUN again -- !!
At home, Kayla has met some great friends, and she's certainly active -- !! |
-- it looks like everyone's losing some weight in this household -- !! |
So there we have it, a girl who was in a bind by no choosing of her own --
-- and her success.
Now, Kayla's nights are spend sleeping on Patrick's bed, and she has conveniently forgotten her difficult past -- !! |
Kayla is also one of the girls, and she takes to that title quite happily, thank you -- !! |
Our girl is home, forever -- that we are sure of --
-- and it's because of a bunch of believers in a shelter, in a home, in a rescue who knew this girl was worth trying for --
-- and they were right -- !!
Also, here, Kayla shows deference to some higher power -- a worthy power, indeed, who got her where she is today --
THANKS, ALL!
